South Loch Ness Heritage Group Visit Brora & Helmsdale with the Community Minibus

On Saturday 6th June, the Stratherrick & Foyers Community Trust Community Minibus helped the South Loch Ness Heritage Group travel to the north of the Highlands for an inspiring day of heritage exploration.

With transport arrangements finalised through the Trust with our Community Minibus scheme and one of our drivers accompanying the group, members enjoyed visits to the Timespan Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdale and the Brora Heritage Centre.

The group spent the day learning about the rich industrial and social history of the area, discovering how coal mining played a vital role in supporting other key local industries, including whisky distilling, salt production and weaving. The visit provided valuable insights and plenty of inspiration for future heritage projects closer to home.

Following the visit, the Heritage Group shared their thanks:

“It was fascinating to discover how coal mining historically supported other major industries in the area, such as whisky distilling, salt production and weaving.

The weather was lovely and we even treated ourselves to some of Sutherland’s best fish & chips!

We have come back with lots of knowledge and new ideas, to hopefully be able to create something similar in Stratherrick & Foyers.

We would like to thank Stratherrick & Foyers Community Trust for making this trip possible with the provision of the community minibus, and for our lovely drivers Steve & Gail!”

We are delighted that the Community Minibus was able to support the South Loch Ness Heritage Group on this enjoyable and informative outing. A special thank you goes to our driver, Steve for helping make the day a success.

We look forward to seeing how the ideas and inspiration gathered during the trip contribute to future heritage initiatives in Stratherrick & Foyers.

📢? reCAP–– Refreshing the Community Action Plan

Back in 2021, the Community Action Plan (CAP) was created to help guide what we as a community would focus on over five years - including how to make the best use of the “community benefit&rdquo

?? reCAP – Refreshing the Community Action Plan

Back in 2021, the Community Action Plan (CAP) was created to help guide what we as a community would focus on over five years - including how to make the best use of the “community benefit” money we receive from renewable power generation.

The CAP identified five priorities:

?? Community life

?? Getting around

?? Outdoors and nature

?? Our homes

?? Organising ourselves

Over the last five years, local groups have been using the CAP to help get things done. Some projects have moved forward well, while others have proved more challenging or are still ongoing - including out-of-school childcare, new affordable homes in other villages, and the future of Foyers School.

Now, five years on, reCAP is an opportunity to reflect on all of this together - and decide what we want to keep, what we want to change, and what else our community might need in the years ahead.

These are questions for the whole community, because the reCAP must belong to all of us. For everyone’s benefit, the Community Trust and the Community Council are working together to facilitate the reCAP process. The updated plan will reflect what the community as a whole wants - not simply the views of the Trust or the Council.

?? So we need your help.

?? Please complete the short survey:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8GnJotw-nhrexb6DPZpsTREVZR0-IHUvlkgRXeM2T2N4yDw/viewform

?? Paper copies of the survey will also be sent out in the post and delivered through your door by the end of the week. Physical copies will also be available at The Wildside Centre, The Hub and Foyers Stores.

?? Deadline: 30th June

?? Find out more:

https://stratherrickcommunity.org.uk/recap

Please share this post and help make sure everyone has a chance to shape the future of our community.

Community Minibus - Drivers Wanted

We are on the lookout for new drivers to help keep up with the demand of our popular Community Minibus scheme.

Since our new minibus was secured back in March, we have had many successful trips. To keep up with the transport requested we need to expand on our pool of drivers. Commitment can be flexible to suit you. If you can help with the odd trip per month, it would help greatly. This service has proved to be hugely beneficial to many within the community.

Due to the vehicle specification all drivers must retain a D1 license.
If you are keen to assist us with being a driver, but do not currently have a D1, we may be able to assist you with securing the relevant training.

Volunteer and paid positions are both available.
If you are interested and would like to discuss this further, please call/text 07949 916955 or by emailing minibus@sfctrust.org.uk

We will be sharing our June trips soon, so keep an eye on the website and social media.
